XBox 360 - Geekiest Moment

I'm a geek. My wife is not. There are times when I'm relating stuff to her and I see the eyes glaze over and I realize I am geeking her out.

Here's a little story. I have been wanting an XBox 360 since launch and you can read about it here and here. So, I wanted one and kept checking the various web-based locaters on the web and found the $1,000.00 prices discouraging. I mean, hey, I wanted one but not at price-gouging rates. I am at a sufficient age now that I can wait. When I was younger, even in my mid-20's I may have crumbled.

Then I found this awesome, and I mean awesome, little desktop app (coded in C# to boot). It sits in the taskbar tray and polls Best Buy and Circuit City inventories for XBox 360's. You put your Zip/Postal code in and it does its work. I had my doubts and it ran for about a week with no hits at all. Then one day, I was coding away and I heard this strange sound from my PC screaming "Finally!!!!". I quickly realized it was the the XBox 360 In-store Inventory Tracker notifying me that the near-by Best Buy had Xbox 360's in stock. Whoah!

I promptly jumped into my car and drove to Best Buy, the whole time wondering if this could actually be true. Well, it was. I walked into Best Buy, spoke to a sales rep and asked if they had any in stock and was informed that, "Yes sir, they are. Which one do you want, the Core or the Premium?". My dumb-founded response was the Premium. I walked out of there with my XBox 360, a play-and-recharge kit for the controller, Call of Duty 2 and NBA Live 2006. Amazing it worked.

I told my wife this story and she could not stop laughing. She told me that she can't believe she married such a geek. I proudly replied, yes...yes you did :) I think this is a great example of how software and the Internet can come together and work for someone, even if it's absolutely the extreme geek thing to do.
