Meet My New Mobile Device...Palm Treo 750

Today I received a new Palm Treo 750 Windows Mobile 5.0 device, which replaces my Cingular 2125. This is the first Pocket PC device I've owned in several years. I plan to have a full review of it once I really get to using it, but I thought I'd give some initial impressions.

Before I do, let me run down the past couple of mobile devices I've owned, most recent at the top...
  • Cingular 2125
  • Audiovox SMT5600
  • Motorola MPX200
All of the above were Windows Mobile Smartphone devices. Prior to them I used a combination of Nokia cell phones and Pocket PC's/Palm PIM devices.

So far, it's been interesting to use a Pocket PC-based phone device. I've definitely gotten accustomed to using the WM Smartphone OS and all of its conventions. The Treo 750 has a touch screen and stylus because it's a Pocket PC device. So far, though, it's nice to see that Palm has gone out of its way to make sure you can use this thing with one hand. Most everything I've seen lets you avoid using the stylus and touch screen. I think that's important for a phone device.

All of my smartphone devices have lacked a keyboard/thumbpad and I have previously thought that simply the ability to read my email while away from my PC was good enough. Recently, though, I've found myself frustrated without the ability to reply to important emails. Sure I could key away on the number pad using T9 to type out an email, but who has 10 minutes to get out 2 sentences? I need some time to become proficient with the keyboard (fat thumbs), but the ability to pound out an email in a minute or so is wonderful.

As for the hardware itself, this is a beautifully made device. It just feels very nice in your hand. Perfect weight and the exterior has a nice rubbery feel to it. The screen is nice, although some would say it's too small. I don't think so, though. It's also much smaller than it looks in photos. It fits nicely in my pants pocket, although it's definitely bigger than my 2125 was

This device is also an HSDPA device which is basically provides much, much faster data transfer rates. So far, it's not available in my area with Cingular, but I'm told later this year it will be. I'm looking forward to that.

I've made a few phone calls so far and the quality has been excellent. The battery life is still in question. I'm going to see how that goes over the next couple of weeks. So far, though, the killer part of this device for me is the keyboard. Makes a big difference.

So, now I'm off to port my ImageBlogger application for Smartphones to the Pocket PC format. Should be fun.
