Vista, WMP 11, and Windows Mobile
For all those out there having trouble with Windows Mobile devices and Windows Media Player (WMP 11), I hope this helps. For quite some time now, when I plug my Cingular 2125 Smartphone into my Vista PC, Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC) fails start up and sync. Digging around a little bit, I noticed that everytime my device was plugged in, wmplayer.exe was being loaded and was displayed in Task Manager. If I killed that process, WMDC would pop up.
I also noticed that WMP failed to see my device and it's storage card. I couldn't figure out how to fix this and Google failed me. Here's what I finally tried that resolved this issue for me. Hope this helps someone...
Close Windows Media Player
Unplug your Windows Mobile Device
Navigate to C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Media Player
Back up the contents of that folder
Delete the contents of that folder
Start Windows Media Player...it will scan your media library
Plug your mobile device in, and Media Player will recognize it and any storage cards installed in it.
This has all been done under Windows Vista, Windows Media Player 11, with a Cingular 2125 mobile device. Your mileage may vary under other configurations.
Coming up...Vista still cannot synchronize large media files to my Smartphone...

I'm having a different issue with this. wmplayer.exe is started indeed, but, it never closes. So when I start an mp3 or movie, it just loads in that invisible instance of Media Player, leaving me with just sound and nothing else, very annoying.
Wish I could in some way kill that integration with Media Player all together.
