iPhone - Obligatory Post
Copyright 2007 Apple, Inc.
There's been lots of tech punditry about Apple's iPhone. I've been sitting back, soaking it in and thinking about it and how innovative it is or isn't. So, here's my analysis...
No doubt it will sell big-time. The price is steep, but I'm sure most iPod users are cell-phone users. Pennies will be saved, gifts will be given and it will sell.
Touch-screen - Looks cool. I'm not sure, though, that it will be satisfying to those heavy-text users out there who love the Blackberries, Treo's and Window-based Smartphones with a tactile keyboard. Looks like thumb operation will be tough.
Battery performance - I think this will be the key. What's the real-life battery life? We heard 5 hours, but what about a hardcore phone/tunes user? Will it be sufficient?
Closed System - This is the deal-closer for me. I build applications and put them on my phone. It has been so much fun. However, even for those who aren't developers, Windows Mobile has thousands of low-cost software apps that can be purchased and installed on your phone. Apple's making a big-bet that this isn't an issue. It's a closed system (for now). Maybe the general end-user won't care. Power-users will, though.
Lack of 3G high-speed connectivity - My current phone uses EDGE and it's way too slow to use effectively. I suspect this will be frustrating for users...although, the 802.11 wireless connectivity, if it works smoothly will help.
This is all very tough to analyze until the bloggers and mainstream media folks get their hands on it and use it for some time. That's when we'll all know if this is the real-deal. I think v2 of the iPhone will be the one to watch. You don't have to be Kreskin to figure that out.
