MSDN Subscriptions - Can I get a VPC Image Please
I've become a big fan of using Microsoft Virtual PC and Virtual Server for all kinds of things. If you've never used Virtual PC, it's a tool that runs on your PC and allows you to install a virtual machine. So, for example, you can create a virtual machine and install the Windows Vista beta without messing up your everyday copy of Windows XP. It runs Vista in a window.
You can set up multiple virtual machines...I've got Ubuntu Linux, Windows Server 2003, Windows Media Center, and Windows Vista RC1 all installed on different virtual machines. The down-side to this is that you have to go through the full OS installation on each VPC image you create. Very time-consuming.
I'm an MSDN subscriber, which basically means you pay an aweful lot of money to get all of the software, OS's, tools, MS Office, and almost everything else you can think of that Microsoft makes. I really hope that at some point, MSDN subscriptions will offer VPC images of Microsoft OS's for download. This seems like a smart move and would really help get an OS up-and running quickly.
PS: Virtual PC and Virtual Server are free from Microsoft now. If you're a developer, or like to test software out, check 'em out.
