DRM Lock-in
In my last post, I talked about how Apple now allows users who've lost their purchased music to re-download it from iTunes. Very nice, indeed, but at the end of the day, you're still locked into using an iPod. What if you wanted to switch to a different device maker for your next player? Well, you wouldn't be able to bring your music over to the new device.
Dare Obasanjo has
an interesting post
today along the same lines. He's decided to forgo the online music sites and will be purchasing CD's instead. I agree completely and that's been my choice now for a while.
In addition to the above-mentioned reasons, DRM has all kinds of other repercussions. For example, I love using
Microsoft PhotoStory 3
to create slide-shows with background tunes. Go ahead and download that for free. It's great.
Anyway, since a lot of my music has been purchased from Napster, MSN Music, and other sites, I was bummed when I tried to include some of it in a photo story for my new baby and was told that because of DRM I couldn't. What? I mean, really I'm just showing this stuff to my wife and the baby's grandparents. I paid good money for those tunes too, shouldn't I be able to use it? So the answer truly is to keep buying CD's and then rip away.
