iTunes...Apple...I Can Only Carry 1 Device
I watched
Steve Jobs keynote
today. Beautifully executed. I knew it was because I watched every minute of it and I'm a guy that doesn't own anything they make. Not that I haven't been tempted, but I'm a coder and the code I know goes on Microsoft devices. I bought my wife an iPod Mini and she loves it. I do too whenever I use it.
Anyway, I loved the new stuff they're doing with iTunes. It looks very cool. I have always loved their support of podcasts. I listen to podcasts all of the time when I take the dog for an hour-long walk. Nothing like listening to Carl Franklin's
.NET Rocks
or
Hanselminutes
. It's what geeks do. Yes, I occasionally listen to
music
, but mostly when I'm walking I take that time to listen to geek podcasts.
Here's the problem I have. I'm not going to buy an iPod. My Windows Mobile Smartphone plays music and video content very well and I've built some really cool apps for it. It fits in my pocket and the idea of going back to carrying 2 devices, an iPod AND a phone, just doesn't fly. It reminds me of the days when I had a Palm Pilot and a cell phone.
Kludgy
.
I realize why Apple is locking in people with a combination of iTunes and iPods, but they really need to open iTunes up to other devices. If they ever do, I am there. I would purchase plenty of their content and plop it right on my Windows Mobile smart phone. Believe me, Apple. And I don't think doing so would really hurt their sales of devices all that much. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think the increased sales on iTunes would more than make up for it. I'm sure they know the numbers better than I, but I'd bet they're along the lines of my thinking.
The thing is, Windows Media Player is lame. I'm beta testing version 11 beta 2 and, while a step up from version 10, it's still lame. No podcasting support at all and no RSS integration at all. What? Why? Where's support for the
Windows RSS Platform
? This stuff is being baked into IE7, yet it doesn't seem the rest of Microsoft is leveraging it. Outlook 2007 anyone?
And yes, even if Apple releases a phone/iPod combination, I'm not likely to buy it. But the content they deliver, I certainly would. I certainly would, for sure. Hear me? My $$$ is waiting :).
