Mobile Devices and Mapping

I love developing apps for my Windows Smartphone. It's actually easy to do if you develop software and know a little about Visual Studio. My favorite little application I've built is a moblog photo posting tool. I snap a photo with my phone and upload it to my moblog. There are plenty of services out there that do this, but it was cool to roll-my-own because it's completely customized.

The most important feature I built is the ability to send out an email to the members of my mail list (friends and family) when I post a new photo. I've even added a feature that let's me pick-and-choose specific recipients so that when I take a photo of my baby, my boss doesn't get an email, but my immediate family does. It's really a great tool and everyone on my mail list loves it. I've been told it's like a little suprise they get in their inbox every now-and-then with a photo showing where I am and what I'm doing.

What I've wanted for well over a year now is the ability to take a photo and have the latitude and longitude captured into the photo's metadata. I know the wireless carriers and some devices out there have GPS baked in, but so far Cingular and my Cingular 2125 device doesn't have anything, at least that I can find. I know there are privacy impicatations about this, but I am just itching to build something once it's implemented.

Imagine being able to build a mash-up of your photos and Windows Live Maps or Google Maps. You and your friends/family would be able to see exactly where you were when you snapped that photo. Imagine looking back at that data over the span of 5 years. It would be awesome and I think people would love it. Think about the memories it would bring back. Anyway, I can't wait for it.

PS: Are there any Windows Mobile devices with GPS support running on Cingular? Would love to know.
